Unstaged
since its premier at the Royal Court in 1969, Peter Gill’s
second play Over Gardens Out is the story of two young
men, Dennis and Jeffry. Jeffry, a Londoner, is living
now in Cardiff where he befriends Dennis. The play is
the story of their relationship. A fractious, romantic
friendship; a friendship poised to explode.
Director
Andrew Steggall was moved towards the play by artistic
director of the Young Vic, David Lan. Short, complex and
with a small cast it was a well chosen vehicle for a young
company.
In
May 2004, over two weeks, Andrew Steggall, designer Tom
Curtis and three actors: Niamh Cuasck, Jeremy Joyce and
Ben McKay work-shopped the text in the Young Vic’s
temporary premises at Oval. The company focused on three
scenes and the work culminated in a twenty minute showing.
