The
structure of the production changed when Andrew Steggall
took on the role of director and cast actor Tom Borroughs
as the Soldier. The
acclaimed, erudite librettist, translator, director and
composer Jeremy Sams was then engaged to write a new translation
of the piece to replace the existing standard translation
by Flanders and Black. The original translation, accurate
and efficient though it was, lacked the verve, wit and irony
that Ramuz’ original contained. Jeremy Sams’
scintillating and immediate translation brought an exciting
and passionate quality to the production whilst adding to
the irony and wit of the original.
